What is a Chemistry or "SuperChem"?

With this test, we are looking at the liquid portion of the blood not the cells. We are looking for chemicals that increase or decrease depending on how the body's organs are functioning. Different chemicals need to be tested depending on what your veterinarian is concerned. Groups of tests are needed. Some simplified examples are below

BUN and Creatinine These numbers increase when the kidneys are having trouble, or

with dehydration.

ALP, AST, ALT, GGT These are abbreviations for enzymes and they can tell us about

liver health.

Sodium, Potassium& Chloride These are electrolytes that change with many different

disease conditions and the pattern of elevations and decreases can help narrow the

list of possible diseases.

Albumin and Globulin These are proteins that also change with different diseases.

Many, Many other chemicals are routinely tested.

We often run some Chemistry tests in our hospital.
